This term has been fantastic in 1LA! We have continued our learning journey and this time we have been looking at the theme ‘How do Oliver’s vegetables grow?’
In Science, we have been learning all about plants and what they need to grow – we even had a go ourselves, have a look at the pictures. Can you guess what we have been growing?
In English, we used text the Oliver’s Vegetables to inspire our writing. We designed our own garden or vegetable patch and described it using wonderful adjectives and prepositional phrases. We also wrote super vegetable poems!
In Maths this term, we have been learning about making equal groups, sharing and fractions – we are getting really good at finding half and quarter.
In Art this term, we have been looking at the Artist Cezanne who paints still life objects. We had a look at some of his paintings and then had a go at creating our own. In DT we have been designing and making our very own fruit salad.
As well as all our learning about vegetables, we also had a super trip to the SS Great Britain. Year 1 children amazed the museum staff with all their incredible knowledge and even learnt some more. The Year 1 teachers were so proud of how enthusiastic the children were and how well behaved they were. I wonder what Term 6 will bring…
We are having another super term in 1LA! This term our topic has been ‘Why is Isambard Kingdom Brunel so important to Bristol?’
In our History lessons, we have been learning all about Brunel’s innovative designs and we were excited to learn that some of them are here in Bristol! Ask us about the facts we know!
In English, we really enjoyed reading Alice in Wonderland Down the Rabbit Hole. We used our imaginations to think about what we would have at our own tea party and wrote invitations to our friends. We have also been doing some persuasive writing! We used wonderful vocabulary to persuade the Queen to come and visit Bristol to see the Clifton Suspension Bridge and SS Great Britain!
In Maths, we have been doing a super job with measurement this term. We have been learning to measure height and length using a ruler and weight and mass using a balancing scale. We will be looking at capacity and volume in the next few weeks.
In DT, we are imagining that we are engineers! We are designing our own piece of playground equipment. This week, we explored different ways to strengthen our free standing structures – take a look at the pictures!
In Music, we are thinking about how music makes the world a better place. We have really enjoyed learning the song ‘If you’re happy and you know it!’
In term 3 we have been exploring the question ‘What is amazing about African animals?’ We have loved learning about all the different animals and have learnt some fascinating facts! Ask us what we know – you’ll be amazed!
In English, we started the term by looking at the text – ‘Sleep Well, Siba and Saba’. We really enjoyed reading this story and discussing our dreams for the future. This linked really well to one of our Bridge Farm values, ‘aspiration’. We also loved reading Giraffes Can’t Dance and retelling it using our own actions to help us write the story!
In Maths, we have been exploring place value to 50! We have been learning how to make numbers within 50 using tens and ones as well as comparing numbers and ordering numbers. We are now learning how to count in our 2s, 5s and 10s.
Our Science this term has been all about African animals. We have learnt lots of new vocabulary. We have been learning the names of lots of different animals and exploring their different features. We used their features to help us to classify and sort them into the different animal groups.
In Geography, we have been learning about Africa. We have been locating the seven continents and five oceans on a map as well as learning more about the country Kenya. We have learnt about the climate there and thought about similarities and difference between Kenya and the UK.
In Art, we have been creating some wonderful printing tiles by looking really closely at the animals skin patterns and trying to recreate the detail on a tile. We will use these printing tiles to make printing weaves.
We have also loved using the E.A.R.L.S to program in computing this term! We are getting really good at programming them to follow simple instructions
What a brilliant term 1LA have had! This term we have been answering the question ‘What was life like for a Victorian child?’ We have learnt lots of facts about Victorian homes, schools, toys and even what jobs Victorian children might have done. Ask us what we know!
In English, year one started by reading ‘Old Bear’ where we re-told the story with a brand new character. We had to think of different ways that our toy could be rescued from the attic and used lots of interesting adjectives in our writing. We have also been using our knowledge of the Victorians to write information texts and recorded a video in the style of Horrible Histories!
In Maths, we have been learning a range of methods to add and subtract numbers up to 10. We have also been exploring 2D and 3D shapes. We have been learning their names and sorting them according to their properties. We are now working on place value to 20.
In Science, we have been exploring different materials. We have named the different materials and sorted them according to their properties. We also carried out an investigation! Barnaby Bear didn’t want to go out in the rain so we investigated which material would make the best umbrella for him. He also spilt his drink on the table and we had to find out which material would be best to soak it up – take a look at the photos!
In Art, we enjoyed listening to the story behind a Willow plate and creating our own. We are now making Victorian vases out of clay. We have made the coil pot and are now ready to paint them!
1LA have had an excellent start to their year 1 journey. We have really enjoyed our topic ‘Who am I?’ this term.
In English, we read the story ‘What makes me a me?’ and wrote excellent descriptions of ourselves. We used these descriptions to put into a letter for our teachers. Year 1 have also been learning all about themselves in Science where we have been learning different body parts as well as all about the five senses.
In Maths, we have been looking at place value. 1LA have been brilliant at ordering numbers, comparing numbers and representing numbers in different ways.
In Art, we did some super self-portrait collages. We have been looking very closely at our features to create some masterpieces – they really brighten up the classroom. Take a look!
In Geography, we have been learning all about The United Kingdom as well as the capital city, London – take a look at some of our drawings of iconic London landmarks.
Miss Allen and Mrs Smith are very proud of how 1LA have settled into their new routines and learning. They really have been super stars!
