Term 5

Earlier in the term, Year 5 had a visit from ‘THE EXPLORER DOME’. After crawling inside we learnt about the planets, our solar system and our sun whilst looking in awe at the images projected on the walls. We remembered a lot from our Science lessons on ‘Space’ and asked some excellent questions. As we are learning about the Ancient Greeks, we also heard some stories about how the zodiac relates to the Greek Gods and learnt how to spot different constellations in the night sky.

Term 4

In Term 4, 5CH have been learning about the rainforest and how climate change affects our environment. In DT, we researched the key features of eco-homes (such as solar panels, sustainable building materials, wind turbines and insulation) which help buildings have as little impact on the environment as possible. We then designed and built our own eco-houses combining as many of these characteristics as we could. We thoroughly enjoyed sawing and working through problems as a team. Unsurprisingly, we were incredibly proud of the results (and the mess we made of the classroom!!!)

Term 3

Our topic in Science this term has been ‘LIVING THINGS AND THEIR HABITATS’.  To bring this learning to life (literally) we had an incubator full of Living Eggs delivered. Within a few days, they had started to hatch (which we watched excitedly on the Chick Cam). Whilst studying the eggs, we learnt about different animals groups and animal life cycles.

We have also written our own Scientific reports recording what we have learnt about the life cycles of birds, combining this with our observations of the Living Eggs and some wonderful diagrams.

Term 2

In 5CH this term, we have been exploring Area and Perimeter. We challenged ourselves to find out the perimeter of the Grove building so we could produce our own blueprints. We used trundle wheels, meter sticks and lots of teamwork to measure all the way around the outside before drawing our own bird’s eye views on squared paper.

Term 1

We love reading in 5CH!

This term, we have enjoyed ‘Odd and the Frost Giants’ and ‘Beowulf’ in our English sessions as well as ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ by Onjali Q. Rauf as our class reader. We particularly look forward to our class ‘free reading’ sessions when we get to explore our class library and share books with others. (Especially the massive timeline books which take up an entire desk!)
